Inside Britain’s Cyber War Machine: The National Cyber Force Goes Public

The UK’s secret weapon against cyber threats just got a transparency makeover. The National Cyber Force (NCF) reveals how it quietly fights state hackers, terrorists, and serious criminals every day to protect Britain.

What is the National Cyber Force?

Set up in 2020, the NCF is a joint operation between GCHQ and the Ministry of Defence. Its mission: defend the UK from cyber attacks, support military missions, disrupt terrorists, and crack down on serious crime online.

Following last month’s Government Integrated Review Refresh, the NCF published ‘Responsible Cyber Power in Practice’, promising to lift the lid on how it uses cutting-edge cyber powers responsibly and legally, while sticking to British values.

How Does the NCF Work?

The force operates covertly but with precision. Its secret weapon is the “doctrine of cognitive effect” – messing with enemy morale and plans without them even realising they’re being targeted.

  • Blocking terrorists from spreading extremist propaganda
  • Thwarting state-run disinformation campaigns
  • Protecting military forces overseas
  • Combating stealthy, ongoing cyber threats
  • Stopping foreign interference in UK elections
  • Removing child sexual abuse content from online spaces

All operations abide by domestic and international law, ensuring the UK remains a responsible player on the global cyber stage.

Leaders Sound Off on Britain’s Cyber Edge

Sir Jeremy Fleming, GCHQ Director: “In an increasingly volatile world, the NCF gives the UK the operational clout to protect our free and peaceful society. We’re countering state threats, supporting military ops, and disrupting terrorists and criminals. This document sets a benchmark for global responsible use of cyber operations.”

General Sir Jim Hockenhull, Commander of Strategic Command: “The NCF is vital to our national security. Working with government and international allies is key. We must out-cooperate and out-compete destabilising states.”

In a move towards more openness, the NCF today announced its commander: James Babbage. A GCHQ veteran of nearly 30 years, Babbage has led the NCF since day one, growing its influence and integrating its efforts across agencies and allies worldwide.
