Nottinghamshire’s Newest Cop Inspires Future Generations
Meet Jacob Zulu, 23, one of Nottinghamshire Police’s brightest new recruits. Fresh into his role as a police staff investigator, Jacob is on a mission to prove that a career in the police force is within reach for everyone—no matter your background or the pressure you face from others.
Behind the Scenes of Crime-Solving
Jacob doesn’t just wear the badge—he uses sharp investigative skills to crack cases. From tackling assaults to sniffing out shoplifting, he supports officers and detectives by liaising with victims and suspects. Unlike traditional officers, his role is purely investigative but no less vital.
“I’ve always wanted to work for the police,” said Jacob, who received his official powers from Chief Constable Craig Guildford after just two weeks on the job.
The Leicester-born recruit reveals, “I thought about becoming a police officer but wasn’t ready for the pressure. Discovering the police staff investigator role was a game-changer.”
From Student to Dream Job in Months
Jacob’s journey started with a policing degree before switching to a Crime and Investigations course at Anglia Ruskin University. He graduated in December 2020, right as the UK headed into lockdown. Spotting the job vacancy online, he applied and landed the role in March 2021.
“Going from graduation to my dream job in just three months feels incredible. I’m proud and lucky to start a career I’ve always wanted—especially during a pandemic,” he said.
Since joining, Jacob has worked on cases involving criminal damage and assault, praised the kindness of his new colleagues, and settled quickly into the force’s supportive environment.
Breaking Barriers and Encouraging Others
Jacob, who is mixed-race, wants to shatter stereotypes and encourage young people from all walks of life to consider police careers. “I know some worry about how friends or family might react. I felt the same but my family’s support has been amazing,” he said.
“It’s important to see people who look like you in roles you dream of. I joined to show others this is achievable. If someone sees me and feels inspired, that means everything.”
His advice for anyone hesitating? “Take the leap. There’s loads of support, and it’s a rewarding, varied career. You’re helping people every day.”
