Bus Driver Battles for Recovery After Tragic Newport Crash
Steve Pitman, the bus driver involved in a fatal crash on Newport’s outskirts, faces a tough road to recovery. The collision claimed the life of mum-of-four Yvonne Copeland and left Steve with serious vertebrae injuries.
Rescue from the Wreckage
Fire crews had to cut Steve from his bus after he tried to steer the vehicle away from a silver Mini Cooper that ignored a stop at the busy Whitehouse Road junction. Friends describe Steve as a consummate professional, with over 13 years behind the wheel for Southern Vectis.
A Man Loved by Many
“He’s not a risk taker — he’s a people’s person who would do anything for anyone,” a close friend said. Shock rippled through the bus depot as colleagues grapple with the loss of a life and the impact on Steve.
Steve’s partner, Michelle Moon, and a tight circle of friends have stayed by his bedside since the tragedy. “We just have to take things slowly,” said a family friend, “and wait for the MRI to reveal the true extent of the damage to his spine.”
Support and Investigation Underway
Regular passengers have been reaching out, offering support, but Steve needs privacy to heal while police complete their investigation.
Southern Vectis General Manager Richard Tyldsley offered condolences: “This is very distressing for all concerned. We extend our sincere sympathies to the family and friends affected. We are fully cooperating with the police and conducting our own review.”
