North Yorkshire Police Launch ‘Punched Out Cold’ Campaign to Stop Deadly One-Punch Attacks

North Yorkshire Police have joined forces with One Punch UK to tackle deadly one-punch assaults head-on. The “Punched Out Cold” campaign targets men aged 18 to 35 in pubs, bars, gyms, and sports clubs during busy summer holidays and festive seasons. In September, the spotlight will shift to educating secondary school children during One Punch Awareness Week.

Four One-Punch Attacks in a Year Spark Urgent Action

In the last twelve months, North Yorkshire has seen four tragic one-punch incidents. Alarmed by the rising numbers, police are stepping up prevention efforts. Partnering with One Punch UK aims to raise awareness among young adults and teenagers about the chilling consequences of a single violent blow.

Charity Born from Personal Tragedy Drives Campaign

One Punch UK was founded by Maxine and Anthony Thompson-Curl after their 19-year-old son Kristian died from a single punch during a night out in Consett, County Durham, back in 2010. Maxine, the charity’s CEO, urges everyone to “stop, think and walk away” to avoid devastating violence.

“One punch has the power to destroy lives and shatter families forever,” Maxine warns. “We’ve spent ten years educating thousands of schoolchildren and supporting affected families.”

She adds that bar staff and licensed premises should stay alert to customers drinking excessively, as alcohol often fuels these violent blows.

Police Back Campaign to Save Lives and Reduce Violence

Detective Chief Inspector Jonathan Sygrove, from North Yorkshire Police’s Major Investigation Team, stresses the deadly impact of one-punch assaults. He calls on people to act responsibly, especially when alcohol or drugs are involved.

The campaign warns a single punch can turn someone into a killer or cause life-changing injuries. North Yorkshire Police and local partners will work closely with pubs, gyms, and sports clubs to promote responsible behaviour and keep communities safe.

Neighbourhood Policing Teams will distribute “Punched Out Cold” posters and engage with gym and club members across the region, urging everyone to “think twice and walk away” before violence spirals out of control.
