Cambridgeshire Cop Nominated for Top Bravery Award After Daring Suicide Rescue

A Cambridgeshire Police officer has been nominated for the National Police Bravery Awards 2024 after a heart-stopping rescue of a man threatening to take his own life.

Hero Cop Faces Danger Head-On

On April 28, 2023, police responded to a chilling call: a friend reported a suicide note left by a troubled man. Sergeant Jamie Cooper was sent to hunt down the individual.

After quick detective work, PS Cooper tracked the man to a famous bridge in Peterborough. There, he found the man teetering on the edge, clutching a ligature and wielding a large samurai sword.

Without hesitation, PS Cooper stepped in. Despite the risk, he calmly disarmed the man and stopped him from harming himself.

Bravery Recognised With Multiple Awards

PS Cooper’s swift action saved a life and prevented a tragedy. He immediately called for backup to secure the scene and ensure the man’s safety.

His courage has earned him nominations not just for the National Police Bravery Awards 2024, but also for a Royal Humane Society award and a Chief Constable Commendation.

“Without Jamie’s intervention, the male would have inevitably taken his life or been seriously injured. His actions are a testament to the dedication and bravery exhibited by police officers every day,” said Cambridgeshire Police Federation Chair Liz Groom.

Chief Constable Nick Dean praised PS Cooper’s quick thinking and courage during the crisis, saying it was vital in safeguarding the individual.
