Manchester Police Clamp Down on Crime with Stop and Search Boost
Manchester cops have launched a bold crackdown amid a violent turf war between local gangs. Following a string of recent attacks, officers have activated Section 60 powers from the 1994 Criminal Justice and Public Order Act to toughen stop-and-search in Cheetham Hill and Higher Broughton.
Violence Erupts: Machete Attack and Gunshots Raise Alarm
Over the last two weeks, the city has seen a spike in crime linked to the ongoing gang dispute. A 17-year-old was seriously hurt in a machete assault, while two separate incidents involved gunfire – fortunately with no injuries reported.
Police Put Community Safety First
Superintendent Rebecca Boyce of GMP’s Manchester Division said: “These are the first serious incidents we’ve had in months. Using Section 60 powers is not a light decision, but it shows our commitment to keeping the public safe from reckless violence.”
She added: “Disputes like these are dangerous and can have grave consequences. By stepping up patrols and proactive arrests under Operation Haemus, we want to deter anyone tempted by violent lifestyles from bringing weapons to our streets.”
Call for Community Help
Operation Haemus is ongoing, with officers executing warrants and maintaining a visible presence in hotspot areas. But police need the public on side.
If you witnessed the recent attacks or have any information, call police on 0161 856 1146, quoting incident number 1108 of 30/08/20. Superintendent Boyce urged: “Please come forward and help us keep Manchester safe.”
