Fake Cop Claims Card Was Cloned
On Thursday, May 26, 2022, the victim – in his late 60s – received a chilling phone call. The caller, pretending to be a detective chief inspector from Hammersmith police station, warned that his bank card had been “cloned.” The victim was ordered to withdraw large sums to help with a police investigation. Adding to the deception, he also spoke with someone impersonating a bank official.
Courier ‘Collects’ £8,000 Cash
After several cash withdrawals, the ‘detective’ called again, insisting the money be handed over to a courier for fingerprint analysis on the banknotes. Around 4.45pm that day, a stranger knocked and collected the cash, vanishing with the £8,000 haul.
Kent Police Hunt Fraud Culprit
Kent Police have released images of the suspect. They urge anyone with information to call 01622 604100, quoting reference 46/100922/22. Tipsters can remain anonymous via Crimestoppers on 0800 555111 or their online form.
“A police force will never ask a member of the public for their bank details or money over the phone,” warned PC Gareth Mahoney. “If you get one of these calls, hang up immediately. Then wait at least five minutes before using your phone again, so you clear the line of any scammers.”
“Sadly, scammers often target the most vulnerable – the elderly or those with learning disabilities. It’s vital everyone knows how to spot these fraud calls and protects their finances. Friends, family, and neighbours must look out for those most at risk.”
