Covid Chaos Forces Admiral Lord Nelson School to Shut for Two Days
Admiral Lord Nelson School has announced it will close to most students for the next two days due to a surge in COVID-19 cases. Instead, pupils will switch to remote learning as the virus wreaks havoc among staff and students alike.
Rising Cases and Staffing Crisis
Over the past fortnight, the school has seen a sharp rise in positive COVID-19 tests. Despite ramped-up cleaning, mandatory masks in communal areas, and a push for regular testing, the outbreak has spiralled out of control.
- 17 teaching staff are currently absent, mostly self-isolating after testing positive.
- 161 students are isolating due to COVID-19.
With half-term around the corner, the leadership hoped cases would stabilise. But the surge shows no signs of slowing, forcing them to act now to protect students and staff.
Remote Lessons and Emergency Care
For the next two days, students must log onto Google Classroom for their usual lessons, covering all the material they’d get onsite.
Parents struggling to supervise younger children can still send years 7 and 8 students into school, where emergency care will be provided. Selected vulnerable students in years 9-11 will also be accommodated. Parents of these older pupils will receive a separate email.
Students attending in person will learn in alternate classrooms, using Chromebooks to follow the same remote lessons as their peers at home.
Important Info for Parents
- If your child can safely stay at home and work remotely, that’s the safest option to prevent further spread.
- Free school meals will be available for collection from reception between 12:15pm and 1pm. Parents must email [email protected] in advance with their child’s name and year group to arrange this.
With these two days plus the half-term break, the school hopes to contain the outbreak and return to normal lessons soon after.
“Thank you for your understanding and support during this difficult time,” the school stated, emphasising the priority is everyone’s safety and quality education.
