John Gary Carney, 69, from Prospect View, Northallerton, was locked up for eight years at York Crown Court. He pleaded guilty to over 20 charges, including making and possessing indecent images of children, voyeurism, and sexual assault on a child.
Police Crack Down After Victim Comes Forward
The chilling case began in January 2022 when North Yorkshire Police received a report from one of Carney’s victims. A raid on his home uncovered damning evidence, including videos showing Carney repeatedly abusing a young girl. He reportedly lured her with vapes, vodka, and cigarettes to carry out his sick acts.
Hidden Cameras Invade Privacy of Women and Girls
Carney’s crimes weren’t limited to direct abuse. He secretly installed cameras in a bathroom to film girls and women showering, adding another layer of violation and betrayal.
From Denial to Guilty Pleas
Carney initially denied the charges, trying to slur a victim as troubled and dishonest. He later admitted to some offences, dismissing them as “foolish”.
Detective Constable Jason Roper called the evidence “incredibly disturbing,” saying the footage “clearly shows the extent of his vile offending.” He welcomed the tough eight-year sentence as a fitting response to Carney’s crimes.
The detective also praised the victims for their courage throughout the ordeal, expressing hope that this sentencing brings them some closure.
