Thousands Snagged in Massive Drink and Drug Driving Crackdown
Police have stopped nearly 3,000 drivers in Surrey and Sussex as part of Operation Limit, a tough month-long campaign targeting drink and drug driving — a major cause of deadly crashes.
Nearly 3,000 Drivers Pulled Over
The national crackdown, focusing on one of the “fatal five” road dangers, is both a deterrent and a public warning about the deadly risks of getting behind the wheel over the limit.
On December 5, officers hit the A26 near Lewes, just outside the Cuilfail Tunnel, making two arrests during routine checks.
- A 32-year-old driving a flatbed van was arrested for suspected drug driving and for driving without a valid MOT.
- A 21-year-old in a Mini Countryman was also cuffed on suspicion of drug driving.
Both suspects have been bailed as investigations continue.
Police Ready to Crack Down Hard
“These random stop checks sadly show that we continue to find drink and drug-drivers behind the wheel,” said Superintendent Rachel Glenton.
“Across Surrey and Sussex, we’ve stopped nearly 3,000 vehicles in the first few days of the campaign. Those caught risk not just road safety but their licences and livelihoods.
“We’re determined to catch every offender and urge the public to report anyone they suspect of driving under the influence.”
