Bomb Alert Sparks Panic Near Paris Olympics Venue
A bomb scare sent shockwaves through Paris today after police found a suspicious object near the Porte de Paris train station in Saint-Denis. The station, right by the Stade de France—one of the main Olympic venues—was immediately locked down as officers waited for a specialist bomb squad to arrive.
Olympic Transport Grounded Amid Threat
The busy train station, crucial for ferrying Olympic fans, was shut down instantly. The Stade de France was empty when the alert sounded, following the end of the first Olympic session at 1pm. The next session, due to start at 5:40pm, now faces uncertainty with train services halted near the stadium.
French Authorities Tighten Security but No Confirmed Terror Threat
Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin said no concrete terror threats have been found during the Olympics’ opening week. However, security forces have arrested about 200 suspects, including some possibly linked to attacks, even on the day of the opening ceremony. Darmanin reassured the public: there is no sign of an organised plot.
“There is no known organised attack being planned,” said Gérald Darmanin during a visit to a Saint-Denis police station.
Heightened Security and Crime Drop Amid Olympics
With a huge force of 45,000 international police, 18,000 soldiers, and aerial units patrolling, petty crime in Paris has dipped. Theft with violence is down 24%, and car thefts have fallen by 10%, thanks to the heavy police and gendarme presence.
Among the forces deployed are UK officers and sniffer dogs specially chosen by French authorities to help secure both Paris and Marseille.
Police Appeal to Public
Authorities urge anyone with information about the suspicious object near Porte de Paris to come forward immediately. The investigation continues as emergency and bomb disposal teams sweep the area.
