A woman has been rushed to hospital after being hit by a bus in Southampton just after midnight. Emergency services closed off Pound Tree Road following the serious collision.
Pedestrian Seriously Injured in Bus Crash
The woman, believed to be in her 40s and from overseas, was struck as the number seven First Bus turned into Vincent’s Walk from Pound Tree Road. She suffered serious head injuries and was airlifted by the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance to Southampton General Hospital.
Bus Driver Unharmed, No Arrest Made
The bus driver, a man in his 40s, escaped uninjured and has given a statement to police. He was not arrested. It’s been reported the woman was on her phone and not paying attention when she crossed the road.
Road Closures and Disruptions Ongoing
Pound Tree Road remains closed at the Vincent’s Walk junction as police carry out a full investigation. Police warn the closure will affect bus services and cause delays.
“We are currently dealing with a serious collision involving a bus and a female pedestrian in Southampton city centre,” said a Hampshire Police spokeswoman.
Inspector Darren Ord added that the woman’s injuries, while serious, are not believed to be life-threatening.
