Watch Out! Crooks Targeting Private Car Sellers in Sussex

Private car sellers across Sussex are being warned about a sneaky new scam. Criminal gangs are using distraction tricks to damage vehicles and force sellers to accept rock-bottom prices.

How the Scam Works

  • Criminals contact sellers and arrange a viewing time.
  • A gang turns up to pick up the car.
  • While one person distracts the seller, others pour damaging liquids into the coolant system.
  • The car’s value plummets instantly due to hidden damage.
  • They then lowball the seller with a much reduced offer.

If the seller refuses, they are left facing costly repairs for the damage inflicted by the scammers.

Police Appeal for Witnesses

Detectives want to speak to three men who may have vital information about these incidents. Anyone who can help is urged to contact Sussex Police online or call 101, quoting serial number 937 of 13/10.
