Osprey Shot Dead in Shocking Wildlife Crime
A gamekeeper found an injured osprey on August 12, 2024, sparking an urgent investigation. The bird, a protected species, was later confirmed to have been shot. Despite efforts by the Scottish Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SSPCA), the osprey’s injuries were so severe it had to be euthanised.
Police Launch Probe Into Illegal Shooting
The injured osprey was rushed to a wildlife centre in Fishcross for treatment. X-rays revealed it had been shot, ending any chance of recovery. Police Scotland’s Wildlife Crime Investigation unit, led by Detective Constable Daniel Crilley, has now stepped in to track down the culprit.
“It’s illegal to kill any protected species and we’re working with partner agencies to fully investigate the circumstances,” said DC Crilley. He urged anyone near the area on August 12 to come forward with information.
