Historic Heist at Arundel Castle: Priceless Treasures Stolen in Brazen Break-In

Burglar Alarm Sparks Midnight Police Raid

At 10.30pm on Friday 21 May, staff at Arundel Castle were jolted by a burglar alarm. Police swooped on the scene within minutes, but the damage had already been done.

Gold Rosary Beads of Mary Queen of Scots Among Stolen Items

Among the loot are items of huge historical weight, including the Gold Rosary Beads carried by Mary Queen of Scots moments before her execution in 1587. Also pinched were several coronation cups gifted by past Sovereigns to the Earl Marshal and a trove of gold and silver treasures.

While the rosary beads lack metal value, their worth as irreplaceable artifacts tied to UK heritage is beyond measure. The thieves forced open a display cabinet on the castle’s public route to snatch the treasures.

Police Probe Links to Burnt-Out 4×4

A spokesman for Arundel Castle Trustees said: “These stolen items have high monetary value, but as unique pieces of the Duke of Norfolk’s collection, their historic importance is priceless.” The trustees urge anyone with information to alert the police.

Authorities are investigating a 4×4 saloon found torched in nearby Barlavington as a possible getaway vehicle linked to the raid.

Call for Witnesses and Tips

Detective Constable Molly O’Malley of Chichester CID said: “If you were near Arundel Castle on Friday night and saw anything suspicious, please contact us online or on 101, quoting Operation Deuce.”

She added: “The castle only reopened on Tuesday 18 May, so visitors over the past few days are urged to recall any unusual behaviour. Also, if anyone is offered any of the stolen items for sale, please come forward.”
