Winchester City Centre Locked Down After Woman Threatens to Jump from Bridge
Police have sealed off a key part of Winchester city centre today after a woman was spotted in distress on a railway bridge.
Major Areas Shut Down
Upper High Street, St Paul’s Hill, and Winchester Railway Station are all closed. Officers from British Transport Police rushed to the scene following a call at 11.34am.
Police have also cordoned off Clifton Terrace and taped off both sides of the bridge leading to the station.
Standoff on the Bridge
The woman, whose age remains unknown, has been sitting on the parapet of the railway bridge for nearly two hours. Officers are in constant dialogue with her, trying to coax her to safety.
The South Central Ambulance Service’s hazardous area response team is also on site, ready to assist.
A British Transport Police spokesperson said: “We are concerned for the welfare of a woman and are doing everything to get her to a safe place.”
Travel Disruptions and Public Safety
Winchester Railway Station remains closed, causing minor delays to South West Trains services through the area.
Officers are directing pedestrians away from the scene to keep the public safe. More updates are expected as the situation unfolds.
