Five Years On: Who Attacked and Killed Tommy Ward?

Brutal Assault on 80-Year-Old Shocks Maltby

It’s been five years since a savage attack rocked the quiet Maltby community in Rotherham. On 1 October 2015, 80-year-old Tommy Ward was viciously assaulted in his Salisbury Road home. Emergency services rushed to the scene, finding Tommy with life-threatening injuries. He was rushed to hospital but tragically died several months later, on 23 February 2016, from wounds sustained during the attack.

£30,000 Stolen in Heartless Robbery

Police found a safety deposit box containing around £30,000 missing from Tommy’s home. A murder inquiry was immediately launched, with officers working tirelessly to identify and bring the perpetrators to justice. Over the years, numerous arrests have been made linked to murder, robbery, and aggravated burglary.

Detectives Make a Fresh Appeal for Information

Deputy Senior Investigating Officer Detective Inspector Lee Nesbeth has urged the public to come forward with any information. He said:

“This was a vicious attack on a defenceless, elderly man, which ultimately resulted in him losing his life. Tommy’s death sent shockwaves throughout the Maltby community, which is incredibly tight-knit, and we have worked unrelentingly over the last five years to identify those responsible for this crime.”

He added, “There are individuals out there who know what happened to Tommy and there are still people yet to talk to police about what they know. I’d ask those people to think about Tommy’s family – his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren – who have fought for five years for answers. They deserve justice.”

Got Info? Help Bring Justice for Tommy

This remains an active investigation. Officers continue to support Tommy’s family as they seek answers. Anyone with information is urged to contact police on 101, quoting reference number 202 of 28 September 2020. Alternatively, tips can be submitted online via the Major Incident Public Portal.
