Knife Sale Crackdown: Three Isle of Wight Shops Caught Selling to Teens
Hampshire police teamed up with Isle of Wight Trading Standards to crack down on knife sales to under-18s. It’s illegal for anyone under 18 to buy a knife — and there are harsh penalties for sellers caught flouting the law.
Underage Knife Sales Carry Heavy Fines and Jail Time
If a retailer sells a knife to a teenager, both the seller and the shop face serious consequences. The maximum punishment? Six months in prison and a hefty £5,000 fine.
Test Purchase Reveals Three Shops Failed to Check ID
The team used teenage volunteers to test 20 high street and local stores across the Isle of Wight. While 17 shops played it safe and asked for ID, three failed to carry out the critical checks.
- One national discount store
- Two local shops
These three retailers have now been warned and given guidance on how to improve their sales practices.
Police Warn Businesses: Get Tough on Knife Sales
Sergeant Stuart Ross said: “Although only a small percentage of businesses failed the test, it’s vital all retailers take their responsibility seriously to prevent knives falling into the wrong hands.”
