London Marathon 2024: Heavy Police Presence and Safety Tips to Watch Out For

Police have rolled out a robust security plan as hundreds of thousands gear up to watch the London Marathon on Sunday, 22 April. The Metropolitan Police are teaming up with British Transport Police, City of London Police, and the event organisers to keep runners and spectators safe in the heart of the capital.

Strict Road Closures and Travel Warnings

Expect major disruption in central London from 6am as road closures kick in. On top of this, a potential DLR strike could throw a spanner in your travel plans. Authorities urge the public to check transport websites and plan journeys ahead to avoid chaos.

Heavy Security Across the Route

Commander Simon Bray, leading the policing operation, promised a “fun and safe experience” for all. “We have a detailed policing plan in place with overt and covert officers along the entire marathon route and transport hubs,” he said.

Prepare to see police dogs, armed officers, and vehicle barriers deployed to prevent any trouble. While there’s no known specific threat, the force is on high alert and urges vigilance. “If you spot anything suspicious, approach an officer or ring 999 immediately,” Bray warned.

Top Tips to Dodge Pickpockets and Thieves

  • Keep purses and bags zipped and secure, worn across your chest or in front.
  • Put cards straight back into zipped wallets or buttoned purses.
  • Carry wallets in zipped or buttoned pockets—avoid obvious bulges.
  • Keep a separate contact list of family numbers in case your phone gets stolen.
  • Never hang bags on chairs or leave belongings on pushchairs or the floor.
  • Use hands-free devices to stop mobile phone snatches.

With tens of thousands lining the streets, staying alert and safeguarding your belongings is crucial. Don’t let thieves spoil what promises to be a brilliant day celebrating London’s biggest running event.
