Reading Tragedy: Murder Probe Downgraded to Manslaughter

Thames Valley Police have revealed that the late-night violence outside a Reading nightclub, first treated as murder, is now a manslaughter case. At around 11.30pm on Friday (12 April), officers rushed to Friar Street near Matchbox nightclub following reports of a fight between two men.

Emergency services found a 48-year-old man who had been punched and then fallen, hitting his head. He was rushed to hospital but tragically died shortly after arrival. His next of kin are being supported by specialist officers.

Man Arrested and Released on Bail

An 18-year-old man from Crowthorne was arrested on suspicion of murder. Police have since released him on bail until 10 May while inquiries continue. The victim’s identity remains unconfirmed as a post mortem was scheduled for 14 April.

Police Appeal for Witnesses

“This incident was initially investigated as murder, but after further enquiries, it is now classified as manslaughter,” said Detective Inspector Sally Spencer of Thames Valley Police’s Major Crime Unit.

“We understand local residents will be concerned, but this was an isolated altercation between two people who knew each other. I urge anyone who witnessed the event or has information to come forward.”
