Middlesbrough Residents Face Flood Challenge in New Interactive Play

Middlesbrough locals are being urged to think fast: what cherished item would they save if floodwaters come crashing in? A gripping new interactive performance, “Washed Away,” offers them the chance to find out.

Step Into the Story of Lost Treasures

Created by North East’s Theatre Space and backed by the Environment Agency, “Washed Away” brings flood drama to life on Middlesbrough’s high street. Audiences pick three sentimental items from eight – anything from photo albums and soft toys to jewellery – then dive into the emotional stories behind each item swallowed by floodwaters.

The show runs over the weekend of 25-26 March with two performances daily, each unique depending on the items chosen. Entry is free, giving everyone a chance to join in this one-of-a-kind theatrical experience.

More Than Just a Play – A Wake-Up Call on Flood Risk

“Washed Away” isn’t just entertainment; it delivers a crucial message. Flooding threatens one in six people in England, warns the Environment Agency, with many underestimating their personal risk. Despite 60% having taken some precautions, a massive 1.5 million at-risk households remain unprepared.

Alex Scaife, Flood Resilience Engagement Advisor at the Environment Agency, said: “It’s incredibly exciting to work with Theatre Space to bring ‘Washed Away’ to Middlesbrough. This production challenges audiences to consider how they’d react if a flood was forecast. Flooding causes heartbreak – loss of homes, financial stress, and irreplaceable personal belongings. It’s vital people act early to prepare.”

“I hope this show not only entertains but also sparks reflection and debate on how to Prepare, Act, and Survive.”

Bringing Flood Awareness to Life Through Theatre

Corinne Kilvington, Theatre Space Artistic Director, added: “We wanted to create a fun yet thought-provoking performance about flooding. Too many think ‘it’ll never happen to me,’ but the truth is far scarier. The Environment Agency’s bravery in tackling this subject through theatre is inspiring. We’re honoured to create a piece that starts conversations, challenges perceptions, and entertains.”
