Rogue Trader Nabbed After Dodgy Deal on Maidstone Pensioner
Man Arrested in Maidstone Fraud Probe
Maidstone police arrested a 48-year-old man from Canterbury after a pensioner reported being ripped off. The victim, a man in his 60s, claimed he paid a large sum in cash for building work — only to be pressured to withdraw more money.
Officers in plain clothes swooped on Saturday 11 August 2018 and launched an investigation. The suspect was held on suspicion of fraud and later bailed to return on Tuesday 14 August.
Police Warn Against Rogue Traders
Detective Sergeant Marc Cananur of the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate urged the public to stay vigilant. He said:
“Avoid tradespeople knocking uninvited offering repairs. If unsure, ask them to leave and arrange a call-back when you’re not alone. Always get a proper quote, ideally from a recognised company. Never pay upfront or withdraw cash at their request.”
He added: “Anyone hassled by cold callers should warn them about contacting Trading Standards and the police.”
Stay Sharp: Tips to Beat Rogue Traders
- Don’t trust unexpected doorstep offers for work or repairs.
- Ask for identification and arrange a safer time to meet.
- Always get quotes in writing from reputable firms.
- Never pay before work starts or hand over cash on the spot.
- Alert Trading Standards or police if you’re targeted.
