Senior RAF Officer Arrested Over Disturbing Sexual Content
A senior RAF officer, who toured with the famous Red Arrows display team, has been arrested after ‘extremely concerning’ sexual material was found on his phone. The Royal Military Police have launched a criminal investigation.
Probe Examines Content and Potential Threats
The military police are zeroing in on what was on the officer’s phone and whether the material was shared. They are also scrutinising messages sent to a possible witness, searching for any signs of intimidation or threats.
Red Arrows Plagued by Scandal and Sexism
This arrest hits amid a growing scandal surrounding the Red Arrows, one of the UK’s best-known display teams. Recent probes revealed a toxic culture with allegations of sexual harassment, unwanted physical contact, and misogyny inside the squadron.
“A service person was recently arrested. As police investigations are ongoing, we are unable to comment further,” an RAF spokesperson said.
How the Investigation Unfolded
According to a source speaking to MailOnline, the inquiry kicked off when someone close to the officer found troubling footage on his phone. Concerned, a member of the public raised alarms within the military, prompting the involvement of the Military Police. The officer was arrested on November 20.
Although the officer’s primary duties don’t directly involve the Red Arrows, he has toured with the team in recent years. The squadron itself is no stranger to controversy. In November last year, its Officer Commanding was suspended over alleged inappropriate relations with a junior member.
Uncovering an ‘Unacceptable Culture’
Two investigations closed last month exposed an ‘unacceptable culture of sexism, harassment, and bullying’ within the elite unit. Female personnel spoke of unwanted touching and lewd messages. Some described being treated as little more than “property” by male colleagues.
Air Chief Marshal Sir Rich Knighton admitted the widespread nature of this behaviour. Last year, two male pilots were kicked out for sexual misconduct and bullying, with nine others disciplined.
Military Faces Tough Questions on Misconduct
This latest scandal shines a harsh light on the ongoing battle against sexual misconduct in the armed forces. It underlines the urgent need for stronger actions to stamp out abusive behaviour and protect personnel.
