Army Ready to Back Met as Armed Cops Hand in Guns After Chris Kaba Fallout
MOD Steps In Amid Police Firearms Crisis
The Ministry of Defence has stepped up to support the Metropolitan Police after a wave of armed officers handed in their guns. This shocking move follows Scotland Yard’s turmoil over an officer charged with the murder of Chris Kaba.
Home Secretary Suella Braverman is launching a full review after more firearms officers began surrendering weapons, triggered by the high-profile case of a marksman accused of killing Kaba.
Military Aid Activated for Counter-Terror Role
The MOD confirmed it’s ready to provide help when called upon. An MOD spokesperson said, “We have accepted a Military Aid to the Civil Authorities (MACA) request from the Home Office to provide routine counterterrorism contingency support to the Metropolitan Police, should it be needed.”
On a recent Saturday night, officers from neighbouring forces pitched in to patrol London amid ongoing protests, highlighting the pressure on the capital’s police.
Braverman Urges Support for Armed Officers
Suella Braverman made it clear that police “must not fear ending up in the dock or carrying out their duties.” Her tough stance aims to reassure officers shaken by recent events.
The Chris Kaba Tragedy
Chris Kaba was fatally shot through a car windscreen in Streatham Hill, south-east London, in September 2022. Officer NX121 faces murder charges and recently appeared in court.
Following this, Met Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley met with 70 firearms officers across London to address deep anxieties among armed ranks.
A police spokesperson acknowledged the officers’ concerns, saying they are “genuinely held” and taken seriously by the leadership.
