Human Placenta Found Near Southampton Hospital Sparks Criminal Probe
Southampton police have ramped up their investigation after a human placenta was found dumped on a path near the Spire and General Hospital on Dale Road. The discovery, reported on June 21, has taken a dark turn with officers now probing the case as a potential crime.
Arrests and DNA Tests Shake Up the Case
A 25-year-old local woman was arrested on suspicion of concealing the birth of a child. However, urgent DNA tests cleared her, leading to her release with no further action. Detective Chief Inspector Elizabeth Pirie, leading the inquiry, confirmed that while suspects have been arrested, not all remain connected to the case.
“We are keeping an open mind into what has taken place and continue our work to understand the full circumstances surrounding this discovery,” said DCI Pirie. “Unfortunately, we now believe due to the length of time that has passed, we are investigating the unlawful concealment of the birth of a child.”
Mother and Baby’s Welfare a Top Priority
Officers remain deeply concerned about the wellbeing of the mother and baby involved. DCI Pirie urged anyone with information to come forward, stressing how vital public support is to crack this grim mystery.
She added: “We have made arrests only where absolutely necessary and have eliminated a number of other people from our enquiries without arrests taking place.”
