London Gears Up to Fight Spike in Moped and E-Scooter Thefts as Crowds Return

Lockdown Lifts, Street Crime Climbs

With most lockdown restrictions now lifted, London streets have become packed once again. But the return of the crowds has also brought a surge in street robberies. Thieves on mopeds and e-scooters are zooming through busy areas, snatching phones, wallets, and bags within seconds without even stopping.

Operation Venice Cracks Down on Moped Bandits

This type of rapid-hit crime soared in 2017, prompting the Met to launch Operation Venice. The team of specially trained officers uses expert tactics to reduce offences – and their efforts have seen street robberies fall year-on-year.

Thieves often target people glued to their phones or those leaving valuables on outdoor tables. Recently, there’s been a rise in attacks against wearers of expensive watches. In response, the Met launched a ‘look up and look out’ campaign urging Londoners to stay alert.

Two-Week Crackdown on Hotspot Heists

To step up the fight, Operation Venice and the Roads and Transport Policing Command will intensify patrols for two weeks. They’ll target key crime hotspots and peak times with motorcycles and specialist tactics designed to catch thieves in the act.

Detective Chief Superintendent Lee Hill, head of Operation Venice, said: “Tackling violence in all its forms is our absolute priority. We want to send a clear message to anyone who thinks it’s OK to steal that it will not be tolerated.

“It’s brilliant to see visitors back in the West End after a tough time. We want everyone to enjoy shops, bars, restaurants and cinemas – but safely.

“Many people look down at their phones or wear headphones, carrying valuable items openly. We urge everyone to be vigilant. Please look up and look out.”

“If you witness a crime, call 999 immediately or 101 for non-emergencies. Reporting crimes promptly helps us catch offenders quickly.”

Top Tips to Stay Safe

  • Stay aware of your surroundings and spot who’s near you
  • Keep valuables like phones, watches and cash hidden
  • Plan your route home carefully

The Met is determined to protect Londoners and keep daily life safe as the city bounces back. But it’s clear – vigilance is the best weapon against these lightning-fast snatch thieves.
