Ten Charged After Grand National Protests Block M57 and Aintree
Ten people have been charged following disruptive protests during the Grand National on April 15, 2023. Demonstrators blocked roads near junction 2 of the M57 and on Wango Lane close to Aintree racecourse, causing major traffic chaos.
Road Blockages Spark Police Action
The protest at M57 junction 2 around 5:15pm caused significant delays as vehicles were obstructed. Meanwhile, another group tried to halt traffic near the iconic racecourse on Wango Lane.
After a thorough investigation, nine individuals face charges of wilful obstruction of a highway. Here’s the list of those charged:
- Sarah 1, 47, no fixed abode
- Zoe Able, 27, from Leeders Pightle, Norfolk
- Lucia Alexander, 40, no fixed abode
- Jamie Carter, 29, no fixed abode
- Elenor Kenny, 19, no fixed abode
- Tobias Brown, 49, West Wycombe Road, High Wycombe
- James Kelly, 46, Mornant Avenue, Hartford, Northwich
- Andrew Houghton, 66, Mendip Crescent, Bedford
- Rosa Sharkey, 23, Chase Side Avenue, Enfield
Additionally, John Edwards, 49, from Cox Road, Alresford, has been charged with stopping or causing a vehicle to remain at rest on a motorway carriageway.
Bail Granted, Court Dates Set
All ten suspects have been released on bail. They are due to appear in court on November 22 or December 20.
Police Investigate Further Protests
An ongoing inquiry continues into another protest at Aintree racecourse the same day.
“We fully respect the right to peaceful protest and free expression of views,” said Detective Chief Inspector Ben Dyer. “However, criminal behaviour and disorder will not be tolerated.”
He urged anyone with information to come forward and help the investigation.
