WW2 Bomb Forces Road and Rail Shutdown in East Tilbury

An unexploded World War II bomb was uncovered at a construction site off Station Road in East Tilbury on Tuesday, sparking a major safety operation. The Ministry of Defence (MOD) and local authorities quickly cordoned off a 500-metre radius to protect the public.

Controlled Explosion Set for Today

MOD experts have been working tirelessly to secure the device, which lies underground, complicating the defusing process. Thankfully, officials stress there’s no wider risk to residents. A controlled detonation is scheduled between 12pm and 2pm today.

Roads and Rail Lines Shut Until Afternoon

To safety, Station Road, Church Road, Coopers Shaw Road, and Fort Road will be closed temporarily. The c2c rail service between Grays and Pitsea will be suspended from 11:30am until approximately 3pm. Passengers travelling from London to Southend via Ockendon should expect disruption and check National Rail Enquiries before travelling.

Chief Inspector Anthony Atkin said: “All the proper procedures were immediately followed to ensure a wide enough cordon was in place to protect the public. The controlled explosion will cause temporary disruption, but these safety measures are essential.”

Residents and commuters are urged to avoid the area while the operation is ongoing. Further updates will be announced once the explosion has been safely carried out.
