Man Shot Dead Outside Newry Home in Brutal Evening Attack

Detectives from Northern Ireland’s Major Investigation Team have opened a murder inquiry after a 58-year-old man was shot dead outside his house in Newry yesterday evening, 1 December.

Close-Range Shooting in Quiet Residential Area

The victim was gunned down multiple times at close range outside his home in the Ardcarn Park area just after 6pm. Police say the attack was planned and executed like an ambush.

Superintendent Norman Haslett, commander for Newry, Mourne & Down, condemned the attack as “beyond reckless”. He said:

“We believe those responsible went to great lengths to plan their attack and lie in wait for their victim to essentially ambush and execute him.”

“The victim, who was a husband, a father and a son, was shot multiple times at close range. The level of violence used was reprehensible. This murder took place in a built-up residential area of Newry at teatime when people were coming home from work and families and children would have been out and about in the run up to Christmas.”

Haslett added the aftermath was just as dangerous, with the victim’s car crashing into a neighbouring property following the shooting.

“Those responsible had no thought whatsoever for the victim, his family or the local community. They have no moral compass and I condemn their actions in the strongest possible terms.”

Police Appeal for Witnesses & Calm

Officers are urging anyone who was in the area or caught dashcam footage of the attack to come forward. Witnesses are asked to call 101 quoting reference number 1600 of 01/12/22.

Information can also be reported online through PSNI’s website or anonymously via Crimestoppers at 0800 555 111 or crimestoppers-uk.org.

Superintendent Haslett also called for calm in the community:

“Local residents will see an increased police presence in the coming days and weeks. The last thing anyone wants is any form of retribution.”
