NCA Cracks Down on DDoS ‘Booter’ Hack Sites in Bold Cyber Sting

The National Crime Agency (NCA) has struck a major blow against cybercrime by taking over and running one of the UK’s top DDoS-for-hire websites. This daring move is part of a sustained effort to disrupt the booming illegal market that sells DDoS attacks as a service, announced today.

NCA’s Sneaky Takedown of Cybercrime Hotspots

Instead of letting the criminal site operate, the NCA swapped its domain for a splash page warning users their data has been captured and that cops will be contacting them. Thousands who logged in thinking they’d get hacking tools were actually handing over valuable info to investigators. UK-based users face direct police warnings, while international offenders are being flagged to overseas law enforcement.

DDoS Attacks: The Cyber Menace Hammering UK Infrastructure

DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) assaults flood websites with traffic until they crash, making them illegal under the UK’s Computer Misuse Act 1990. Booter services let anyone place DDoS orders in minutes, wreaking havoc on businesses, critical infrastructure, and access to vital public services. These services turn novice hackers into cyber troublemakers with just a few clicks.

Global Operation Power Off Strikes Back

This undercover campaign is part of the wider Operation Power Off — a global law enforcement initiative fighting DDoS crime networks. After months of collaboration between the NCA, Europol, Netherlands Police, and the FBI, 48 major booter sites were shut down last December. The NCA also arrested an 18-year-old suspected site admin in Devon. One seized site alone had launched over 30 million attacks.

“Booter services are a key enabler of cybercrime,” said Alan Merrett from the NCA’s National Cyber Crime Unit. “DDoS has become an easy entry-level crime due to perceived anonymity and ease of use. We won’t reveal how many sites we control or for how long, but anyone looking to use these services now faces serious risks.”

The crackdown sends a clear message: the era of easy, anonymous DDoS-for-hire is ending – and cyber crooks beware.
