Met Police Cracks Down on COVID Rule Breakers in London

The Met is ramping up enforcement of COVID rules amid rising infection rates and regulatory changes in the capital. Londoners should expect to see police stepping up patrols and engaging the public to remind them of their safety duties.

Targeting Busy Public Hotspots

Working with local councils and partners, officers will focus on crowded public spaces where the risk of virus spread is highest. But this crackdown won’t slow the Met’s ongoing fight against crime, with violence suppression still top priority.

Firm but Fair: The ‘4 Es’ Approach

  • Engage: Officers will talk to people and explain the rules.
  • Explain: Clear guidance on COVID regulations will be given.
  • Encourage: Police will urge compliance.
  • Enforce: Strict action will follow only as a last resort.

But flagrant offenders won’t get off lightly. Every London borough will have dedicated officers ready to react quickly to serious breaches.

Met Boss Issues Warning

“The vast majority of Londoners have stuck to the rules and responded positively to this unprecedented situation. We thank them,” said Deputy Assistant Commissioner Matt Twist, leading the Met’s pandemic response.

“Officers have tackled tough incidents all summer, including unlicensed music events, sometimes facing hostility and violence. We often stopped events before they even started.

“Now, more than ever, everyone must do their bit to reduce virus transmission. Our officers will explain the regulations and act firmly against those deliberately risking public health.

“We urge the public to report serious breaches via 101 or online. But remember, there are exemptions and not every report means immediate police action.

“With crime and antisocial behaviour rising back to pre-COVID levels, the Met will balance pandemic policing with keeping London safe on all fronts.”
