UK Terror Threat Level Raised to Severe: ‘Highly Likely’ Attack Warning
The UK’s terror alert has been ramped up from “substantial” to “severe” today (Monday, 15 November), the Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre (JTAC) revealed. This means a terrorist attack in the UK is now deemed “highly likely.”
Precaution, Not Panic
JTAC stressed the upgrade is a precaution, not triggered by any specific threat. “We want the public to stay alert but not alarmed,” said a senior official.
Recent weeks have seen two terror-related incidents: the killing of MP Sir David Amess in October and a separate attack yesterday. Though there’s no link between these events, the close timing has influenced the intelligence picture and prompted the threat rise.
Police Stepping Up Patrols and Security
The increased threat level activates a tried-and-tested enhanced police response. Officers will be boosting visible patrols around key sites, events, and locations across the country in the coming days.
“Our officers will work day and night to keep the public safe,” said JTAC. The authorities are also adding extra security measures behind the scenes.
Communities Key to Beating Terrorism
Deputy Assistant Commissioner Twist said: “Communities defeat terrorism. It’s crucial the public stay vigilant and report anything suspicious.”
“Our efforts only succeed with the public’s support. Communities continually reject those spreading hate and division. If you see something, say something — it won’t ruin lives but could save them.”
If you spot suspicious activity, report it confidentially through the Anti-terrorist Hotline or gov.uk/ACT.
