Two children and another individual tragically died overnight in the English Channel. French authorities revealed the fatal incident happened as 38 asylum seekers attempted the deadly crossing in a tiny dinghy.
Boat Capsizes Near Pas-de-Calais
Regional prosecutor Laurent Touvet detailed the horror unfolding off the coast of Pas-de-Calais, near the town of Sangatte. He said the victims were “crushed at the bottom of the boat.” While 35 people were rescued and brought ashore around 5 am, another vessel ran into trouble with three people still missing.
French Authorities Crack Down on Smugglers
French officials blamed smuggling gangs for the tragedy and vowed to step up their fight against human traffickers. They praised police, firefighters, civil protection volunteers, and sea rescue teams for their swift efforts in saving lives.
Earlier Tragic Incident on Same Day
Earlier Tuesday, a separate tragedy struck when a woman was found unresponsive at sea and airlifted to shore. Kent Police were alerted just after 1 pm but sadly, she did not survive.

Since January, at least 23 people have died trying to cross the Channel in small boats. In response, UK ministers are exploring converting parts of RAF bases to house migrants, aiming to ease pressure on hotels used for asylum seekers.
Government Toughens Stance on Immigration
New Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood announced plans to suspend visas for countries unwilling to cooperate on deportations. With over 30,000 arrivals by small boats so far this year, the UK faces a mounting immigration crisis.
