Kent Police Wildlife Squad Gets Boost with New Specialists

Special Sergeant Oliver Woodrow and Special Constable Michael Davies have ramped up Kent Police’s fight against wildlife crime. After completing a tough one-week training, they’ve pushed the number of qualified wildlife crime officers in the force up to 16.

Wildlife Crime Expertise Goes Up a Gear

Armed with fresh specialist knowledge, the pair will help plan operations and work closely with colleagues to tackle wildlife offences across Kent.

“The Rural Task Force covers a wide range of duties, and wildlife law can be tricky,” said Sgt Woodrow. “This course gave me not only the legal know-how but also insight into why these crimes happen. That’s crucial when responding to incidents.”

From Muddy Fields to Puppy Farm Raids

Sgt Woodrow has spent 23 years volunteering with Kent’s Special Constabulary. Originally aiming to become a Police Constable, he now enjoys the best of both worlds, juggling a police staff role alongside his special duties.

He’s been with the Rural Task Force for a year and says their work is far more varied than just standing in muddy fields:

“People often think we just trudge around in wellies all day – and sometimes we do! But the rural community faces a mix of challenges, from theft and domestic abuse to unique rural crimes.”

“We also collaborate with the RSPCA to smash puppy farms, where cruel criminals run illegal dog breeding rackets to bankroll lavish lifestyles and other dodgy dealings.”

“It’s rewarding work, and I’m proud to dedicate my time to tackling these issues that matter to the community.”

Patrolling Fields and Fighting Fish Poachers

The rural special constables keep a high-visibility presence with proactive patrols. They build strong links with farmers, gamekeepers, and rural homeowners. Joint patrols with the Environment Agency target fishing crimes under Operation Traverse.

Despite fish poaching sounding like small fry, some prize carp can fetch up to £5,000 each – a tempting loot for criminals.

Special Constables like Woodrow and Davies play a vital role gathering intelligence, reassuring communities, and supporting wider partnership efforts to crack down on rural crime across Kent.
