Safe Space Scheme: Shops Offer Sanctuary in Warsop

Women, girls, and anyone feeling unsafe in Warsop can now seek refuge in local shops thanks to a new Safe Space initiative. Up to 25 businesses will join the scheme, equipped with CCTV cameras and trained staff ready to help those in danger. Safe Space signs will mark these havens, signalling a secure spot to anyone in need.

New Tech and Lighting Boost Town Security

Warsop is also getting a security upgrade with fresh CCTV installations, improved street lighting, and environmental tweaks designed to make public spaces safer. Refuge point cameras will be fitted at key spots, monitored 24/7. In emergencies, people can press a button to connect directly to the CCTV control room and get instant help.

£3m Safer Streets Fund Drives Safety Push

This project is part of a wider safety overhaul funded by the £3 million Safer Streets scheme secured by Nottinghamshire’s Police and Crime Commissioner. The funding also supports youth diversion programs, ANPR cameras to catch criminals, and 190 free licenses for the Hollie Guard app – a personal safety tool that alerts contacts with location and video when activated.

Local Police and Officials Back the Scheme

“The training and cameras inside businesses in Mansfield will be an asset in helping women and girls have that extra security and safety net,” said Inspector Kylie Davies, District Commander for Mansfield. “These spaces are open to anyone who feels in danger, with staff and officers on hand.”

Police and Crime Commissioner Caroline Henry added, “Violence against women and girls is a priority. The Safe Space scheme, while aimed at supporting women and girls, is there for anyone who needs help. People should never be afraid when out in public.”

The Safe Space plan builds on a successful scheme launched in Sutton-in-Ashfield earlier this year, inspiring towns nationwide to follow suit.

Local business owner Rachel Dunlop said, “This scheme is definitely something Warsop needs. Having shops watch out for people and support each other is a brilliant idea.”

Councillor Marion Bradshaw, Portfolio Holder for Safer Communities, Housing, and Wellbeing at Mansfield District Council, stated: “We’re working with police, schools, and charities to ensure the community feels safe and empowered. This partnership approach will improve life quality in Warsop.”
