A man in his fifties has been airlifted to hospital after a terrifying 25-metre fall down a disused mine shaft on the coastal path near St Just, Cornwall.

Dramatic Rescue on Cornwall Coast

The alarm was raised just after 1.15pm when a member of the public dialled 999 reporting the serious fall. Devon and Cornwall Police quickly called in the UK Coastguard, triggering a complex rescue operation.

Teams from Lands End and Penzance Coastguard, alongside the Newquay-based UK Coastguard search and rescue helicopter, rushed to the scene. They were joined by Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service, South Western Ambulance Service, and Cornwall Search and Rescue Service.

Challenging Rescue from Abandoned Shaft

The man fell through a precarious, disused mine shaft, complicating his extraction. Rescue crews used specialised rope techniques to reach and secure the injured walker before airlifting him to safety.
