West Sussex Paramedic Nabbed in Turkey Over Snorkelling Coin Snag
Holiday Souvenir Turns into Legal Nightmare
A British paramedic from West Sussex has been arrested at Bodrum airport, Turkey, after trying to fly home with a handful of ancient coins he found while snorkelling. Toby Robyns, 52, was stopped on Friday on suspicion of illegally taking Turkish artefacts without notifying authorities.
Coins Found During Family Holiday
The father-of-five stumbled upon 13 coins during a two-week break in Turgutreis. Thinking they were harmless souvenirs, he pocketed them—only to be seized and detained upon departure.
Facing Up to Three Years Behind Bars
Robyns is currently held in Milas prison, awaiting news on possible charges. If convicted, he could face a prison sentence of up to three years.
Family and Officials React
A family friend blasted the tough treatment: “This was harmless fun on a holiday. When he went to get his flight home, they dragged him off and searched his hand luggage.”
The Foreign Office confirmed: “We are assisting a British man following his arrest in Bodrum and remain in contact with his family and the Turkish authorities.”
