Operation Sceptre Cracks Down on Knife Crime with Tough New Laws
Launching today and running until Sunday 22 May, Operation Sceptre is hitting back at violent crime with the latest updates to the Offensive Weapons Act (2019).
Key Changes Target Online Sales and Delivery of Bladed Weapons
- Stricter age checks for buying knives and weapons online
- Couriers must now perform tighter age verification on deliveries
- Certain weapons are outright banned — even in private homes
Police will be out in force, educating youngsters, parents, schools, and communities about these new rules and the crackdown on knife crime.
Police and Partners Unite to Shield Youth from Violence
This week-long operation teams up police with local councils, public health, youth workers, and charities. The goal? To stop young people from getting sucked into knife crime and gang violence.
Assistant Chief Constable Dave Minty said:
“The latest Offensive Weapons Act is designed to protect people from the devastating fallout of knife crime. While knife offences in Wiltshire remain low, we refuse to be complacent. The impact on victims and communities can be shattering.”
Minty added: “Most young people steer clear of knives, but possession is rising nationwide. Many carry blades for ‘protection’ — a dangerous gamble that puts their lives at risk.”
He stressed that Operation Sceptre focuses on teamwork and public engagement to tackle the problem head-on. “We will continue to investigate all knife-related crimes thoroughly.”
Crime Commissioner Backs Early Intervention to Keep Communities Safe
Police and Crime Commissioner Philip Wilkinson praised Wiltshire Police’s efforts but warned more had to be done. He said:
“Safe communities come from more than policing. Early intervention is key to stopping young people drifting into knife crime. We must offer positive outlets and support to at-risk youth before it’s too late.”
Wilkinson urged anyone with information about knife carriers or violent activity to speak up via 101 or 999 in emergencies. Anonymous tips can be given to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
