A tense hostage drama near a Baltimore synagogue ended in a deadly shootout after a woman daringly escaped by smashing through a window. The suspect was shot dead by SWAT officers.

Hostage Held at Gunpoint Near Synagogue

Police rushed to a home on Park Heights Avenue in Baltimore’s quiet Glen neighbourhood just after 12.30pm on Tuesday following burglary reports. The house sits mere steps from the Agudath Israel of Baltimore synagogue, an Orthodox Jewish place of worship.

Officers quickly uncovered a hostage situation inside, with a woman held at gunpoint by the gunman, according to reporter Richard Worley. During the standoff, the woman escaped by throwing herself through a window.

Gunfire Erupts: Officer Wounded

Police radio chatter revealed officers came under sniper fire from the house, forcing them to duck behind vehicles as bullets flew. In the chaotic shootout, a police officer was shot in the leg and rushed to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Centre. Officials later confirmed he was in stable condition.

Another officer applied a tourniquet at the scene before paramedics arrived.

Gunman Killed in SWAT Shootout

The gunman, believed to have ties to the residents, was fatally shot by a SWAT officer after the situation escalated. The heavy police response saw multiple agencies swarm the area, sealing off streets near the synagogue.

Initial fears linked the incident to the nearby synagogue, which holds daily prayers including a 12.30pm service. However, investigators confirmed the drama originated within the residence, not the place of worship.

Officials Praise Police, Investigation Continues

Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott praised the officers’ fast action. He said:

“We’re just thankful that the officer and anyone else in that neighbourhood were not severely harmed. Our thoughts are with him and his family, and even the family of the deceased.”

Residents were urged to avoid the 6200 block of Park Heights Avenue as police continued their investigation. Maryland Governor Wes Moore pledged full support for local authorities, stating:

“We have been in close contact with the Baltimore Police Department and stand ready to provide any state support that may be needed.”

The probe into the hostage incident and shooting is ongoing.
