Officers responded to Marlborough Street in Dunkirk around 10.15 p.m. on Sunday (19 February) and discovered the house’s backdoor wide open.
After being greeted by the strong odour of cannabis emanating from within, responding officers went inside the three-story building to investigate further.
They quickly discovered around 50 plants growing inside the dining room, as well as growing equipment in the living room.
Around 100 more plants were discovered upstairs in two rooms, with a bedroom on the top floor also housing about 50 plants.
As if that weren’t enough, cops also discovered a basement containing approximately 70 cannabis plants.
The cannabis haul seized totaled more than 300 plants spread across three floors and the basement.
Police have since removed all of the drugs and growing equipment from the property.
Officers detained two men nearby who were suspected of being connected to the grow as the discovery was being made.
Both men, aged 26 and 31, were arrested on suspicion of cannabis cultivation, driving without a licence, and driving without insurance.
We are pleased to have been able to shut down this illicit operation before it could cause any harm,” said Nottinghamshire Police Inspector Ben Lawrence.
Cannabis was found growing across three floors and a basement all within the walls of this property, which provided an undoubted fire risk when you consider how it was being powered.
There is a common misconception that growing cannabis is a victimless crime, but this really isn’t the case, as it puts people in the surrounding area in unnecessary danger.
“This was a great result that all in all enabled us to seize and destroy around 300 plants, as well as the equipment used to grow them.
We have also arrested two suspects, but our investigations into this incident are still ongoing, so anyone with information should call the police on 101, quoting incident 769 of 19 February 2023.
