Such was the case when Sir Paul McCartney gave a Mercedes-Benz to his daughter Stella for her 21st birthday. The car, a 1992 K-reg 190E, was a prized possession that had only ever been owned by Stella, and now, 30 years later, it has been auctioned off for £7,000.
According to Ben Homer, from Littleton Auctions in Worcestershire, the car had only 43,000 miles on the clock and had been kept covered in a barn for 14 years. As a result, it was in such pristine condition that Mr. Homer referred to it as a “time warp.” It had been lovingly recommissioned by a local mechanic, which made it a highly coveted piece for collectors.
Stella McCartney, a fashion designer who lives just 10 miles from the auction firm, left a Beatles annual in the back of the car as a nod to her father. Sir Paul McCartney, of course, was one of the Beatles’ founding members, and his daughter’s connection to the band has added sentimental value to the car.
The Mercedes-Benz was expected to fetch between £5,000 and £8,000, and it ultimately sold for £7,000. While it may not have been the most expensive sale of the day, it was certainly a meaningful one for those who appreciate the history of the McCartney family and the Beatles.
Other classic and antique cars in the lot included a 1981 DeLorean, famously seen in the Back to the Future films, which had been painted red by the original dealer at zero miles. This feature made it a very rare find and is expected to fetch between £50,000 and £70,000.
