Transport for London (TfL) and Boldyn Networks have completed the rollout of high-speed mobile coverage across the entire Elizabeth line, marking a significant milestone in enhancing connectivity on London’s transport network.
The completion means passengers on the Elizabeth line can now enjoy uninterrupted 4G and 5G mobile coverage, including in the previously tunnelled sections of the line. The move is part of the Mayor of London’s wider initiative to bring seamless mobile connectivity to the Underground and other TfL networks.
A Milestone for London’s Transport Network
The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, expressed his delight at the achievement, stating, “Bringing mobile coverage to the Underground network is a key commitment of mine, so I’m delighted that the entire Elizabeth line network now has 4G connectivity. This ensures that Londoners and visitors can stay connected, access the latest travel information, and stay in touch with colleagues, friends, and family throughout their journey.
The project first introduced mobile coverage on sections of the Elizabeth line earlier this year, including between Paddington and Liverpool Street. The final phases now cover tunnels stretching through Whitechapel, Stratford, Canary Wharf, Custom House, and Woolwich, allowing seamless connectivity for passengers travelling across central London.
Benefits for Passengers and Staff
In addition to keeping passengers connected, the enhanced network coverage will benefit TfL staff by improving internal communications and supporting the safe and efficient operation of the transport network. The infrastructure also hosts the new Emergency Services Network (ESN), which will provide first responders with real-time access to crucial data and images during emergencies.
Andy Lord, London’s Transport Commissioner, commented, “The completion of this vital project comes at a crucial time as we approach the festive period. This achievement represents a significant engineering feat, carried out during challenging hours, and we are committed to delivering these benefits across the rest of the network as quickly as possible.”
Future Connectivity Plans
Boldyn Networks, which holds a 20-year concession from TfL awarded in 2021, is extending mobile connectivity across the Tube, Docklands Light Railway (DLR), and Elizabeth line networks, as well as the London Overground Windrush line between Highbury & Islington and New Cross.
Work is already underway to bring coverage to sections of the Northern line between King’s Cross St Pancras and Moorgate by early 2025, and tunnelled sections of the Bakerloo line between Piccadilly Circus and Embankment. Additional coverage is also planned for parts of the Piccadilly and Victoria lines in the coming months.
Network Collaboration
All major UK mobile operators – Three UK, EE, Vodafone, and Virgin Media O2 (VMO2) – are part of the rollout, ensuring compatibility for a wide range of users. Large sections of central London are already equipped with mobile coverage, with further expansions set to continue over the next year.
The development not only enhances passenger convenience but also supports safety and operational efficiency, making it a transformative upgrade for London’s public transport network.
