A man in his 50s has died following a devastating gas explosion that destroyed a terraced home in Worksop, Nottinghamshire on Saturday night.
Emergency services rushed to John Street shortly after 7.39pm on April 12, after reports of a large explosion rocked the area. The blast completely destroyed one property and severely damaged several neighbouring houses, prompting a mass evacuation and large-scale emergency response.
Body Recovered from Rubble
Firefighters and specialist search teams worked through the night to locate residents feared trapped in the wreckage. Tragically, a man’s body was recovered from the ruins of the destroyed home the following morning. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue confirmed the fatality, stating:
“Despite the best efforts of the responding emergency service personnel, he died at the scene. On behalf of Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service we would like to extend our sincere condolences to the man’s family and friends.”
Investigation Underway
The cause of the explosion is under investigation. A police cordon and road closures remain in place while structural safety assessments and forensic examinations are conducted.
Witnesses Describe the Blast
Shocked residents reported hearing a loud bang that “shook the street”. One local wrote on Facebook:
“I had just got home from mass and thought the back end of my car had blown off. It was that loud.”
Another said:
“We had just arrived at the Savoy and heard the bang and felt a shudder. Hope everyone is okay.”
Photos from the scene show total devastation—bricks, roofing tiles, and shattered glass strewn across the street. A neighbouring house’s roof caved in from the impact of the explosion.
Evacuation and Emergency Shelter
Approximately 20 people were displaced by the incident and are now being supported at Crown Place Community Centre, with others staying with friends or family. Local councillor Mike Introna expressed sympathy, saying:
“So sad to hear of the fatality and injuries following the gas explosion. Sincerest condolences to the family and friends of the gentleman.”
Ongoing Safety Concerns
Residents are being urged to avoid the area, with Nottinghamshire Police issuing a warning to not fly drones over the site, which could disrupt emergency operations and violate aviation laws.
The fire service said the property involved had been “significantly damaged”, and the risk of further collapse or residual gas leaks remains.
