Operation Limit: Police Target Drink and Drug Drivers Across Sussex and Surrey

Thousands of motorists have been stopped and spoken to by police as part of Operation Limit, a month-long national campaign aimed at tackling drink and drug driving across Surrey and Sussex.

The initiative, which addresses one of the “fatal five” factors contributing to deaths and serious injuries on the roads, has already seen officers conduct nearly 3,000 stop checks. These checks not only act as a visible deterrent but also serve to educate drivers about the dangers of being over the limit for alcohol or drugs.

The effectiveness of the campaign was highlighted on Thursday, December 5, when officers conducted checks on the A26 outside the Cuilfail Tunnel in Lewes, resulting in two arrests.

A 32-year-old man driving a flatbed van was arrested on suspicion of drug-driving and driving without a valid MOT. Additionally, a 21-year-old man driving a Mini Countryman was arrested on suspicion of drug-driving. Both individuals have been bailed pending further inquiries.

Superintendent Rachel Glenton commented on the ongoing campaign:
“These random stop checks sadly show that we continue to find drink and drug-drivers behind the wheel.

“Across Surrey and Sussex, we have already stopped nearly 3,000 vehicles in the first few days of the campaign.

“Not only do those who are over the limit for alcohol and drugs risk the safety of themselves and other road users, they also risk losing their licence and their livelihood if caught.

“We are determined to catch drink and drug drivers, and urge the public to report anyone they think may be driving over the limit.”

If you suspect someone of driving under the influence, report it immediately by calling 999.
