Can You Crack the Code for Human-AI Naval Teams?
The Defence and Security Accelerator (DASA) is calling on innovators to help shape the future of naval command. They want fresh ideas to integrate collaborative AI with human decision-makers, creating cutting-edge Human-Autonomy Teams (HATs).
£1.7 Million Up for Grabs in Intelligent Ship Phase 3
- DASA and the Defence Science Technology Laboratory (Dstl) launch Intelligent Ship Phase 3
- Funding pot worth up to £1.7 million for a single winning proposal
- Deadline: Midday, 6 June 2023 (BST) – don’t miss out!
This phase builds on earlier progress and aims to design and demonstrate effective HATs combining smart AI agents with human expertise. Defence wants solutions that improve complex naval Command and Control (C2) systems by blending multiple AI agents working collaboratively alongside human operators and decision-makers.
What’s the Mission?
DASA seeks innovative approaches that:
- Put humans at the centre of collaborative AI system design
- Explore system-level arbitration techniques for smooth AI-human teamwork
The goal is to develop trusted, timely decision-making tools for future battlespaces, where quick judgement in a data-heavy environment is crucial.

Phases 1 and 2 have already laid solid groundwork. Phase 1 (£1 million) built the foundations with Intelligent Agents and an AI network system called ISAIN. Phase 2 (£2 million) focused on integrating and testing these agents with Royal Navy teams, giving DASA early insights into usability and performance.
Now, Phase 3 will push boundaries further, looking to perfect the blend of AI and human smarts in naval operations.
