An 18th birthday party at The Fishbourne Inn in Ryde turned into an unexpected drama when special sparkler candles on the cake set off the fire alarm on Bank Holiday Monday.
Firefighters Rush to Scene
Fire crews quickly responded to the automatic fire alarm call. Shirley Ralph, the birthday boy’s grandmother from Newport, explained the mix-up: “The alarm was set off by the special sparkler candles on my grandson’s birthday cake.”
Birthday Party Takes a Fiery Twist
The packed pub inside and out was left red-faced as the fire crew burst through the doors. Thankfully, there was no actual fire. The firefighters took the false alarm in good humour, easing the tension.

Shirley added: “We were so apologetic, but some lovely photographs were taken of my grandson wearing one of the firefighter’s helmets.” One thing’s for sure – David won’t be forgetting his 18th birthday anytime soon!
