Tragic Bronx Blaze Leaves Dozens Hurt, Multiple Fatalities Feared

A massive five-alarm fire ripped through a 19-storey apartment block on East 181st Street in the Bronx on Sunday, leaving at least 63 people injured and officials fearing multiple fatalities.

200 Firefighters Battle Fierce Flames

The New York Fire Department scrambled around 200 firefighters to tackle the inferno. They arrived just after 11am and managed to bring the blaze under control by 1pm, but not before the building was severely damaged.

FDNY Commissioner Dan Nigro warned: “I anticipate numerous fatalities.” So far, no deaths have been officially confirmed.

“The last time we had a loss of life that may be this horrific was over 30 years ago, also here in the Bronx,” Nigro added grimly. The cause is still under investigation.

Harrowing Escape Stories From Residents

At least 32 victims are in life-threatening condition, with nine more described as serious due to smoke inhalation and injuries. Rescue teams pulled terrified residents from windows and ladders in dramatic evacuations.

One survivor, Dejesus, who lives on the third floor, described the nightmare: “I was making breakfast when I noticed smoke and heard cries for help. Flames exploded from the back windows. The fire department had to break in to get us out. We had to climb out the window – it was so scary.”

Thankfully, Dejesus and her family, including a three-year-old child, escaped safely.

Mayor Eric Adams Visits Scene Amidst Grim Outlook

Newly inducted Mayor Eric Adams arrived at the scene to get a briefing. He warned the fire’s impact would bring “pain and despair” to New York City.

He called the tragedy “one of the worst fires we have witnessed here in modern times.”
