Dave Nutter, 63, a former Royal Navy veteran, suffered a fatal heart attack while driving on the M27 near Fareham with his 9-year-old grandson. Despite his medical emergency, Dave heroically managed to pull the car safely to the side of the motorway.
Grandson Flags Down Help as Air Ambulance Rushes to Scene
After Dave stopped the car, his quick-thinking grandson flagged down passing motorists, ensuring help arrived swiftly. The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance was called to the scene, and Dave was rushed to Queen Alexandra Hospital.
Heroic Efforts Couldn’t Save Dave After Heart Attack
Dave underwent a stent operation, but the oxygen deprivation caused severe brain damage. Tragically, he passed away on the morning of July 18th. His daughter Kathryn paid tribute to his bravery:
“My dad was a hero at the wheel and somehow managed to bring the car to a safe stop, saving both their lives and preventing a major motorway crash. Our son was fine and managed to flag down help, but unfortunately, my dad’s heart stopped for 25 minutes. He had CPR at the roadside.”
“Those who knew my dad will remember him as the kindest, funniest, most selfless soul. Even during his heart attack, he ensured the car was safe for his grandson. He always put others first and remained a hero to the end, donating organs and tissue to save other lives.”
Family Seeks Donations to Honour Navy Veteran’s Legacy
Dave served more than 22 years in the Royal Navy, including during the Gulf War. His family is now fundraising to give him the send-off he deserves.
“This was so unexpected that my dad had no funeral plans,” Kathryn explained. “We want to give him a hero’s goodbye.”
