Massive 7.4 Quake Strikes East Indonesia, Tsunami Fears Spark Panic
A powerful 7.4 magnitude earthquake rocked north of Flores Island in Indonesia’s East Nusa Tenggara province at around 3.20am, sparking widespread terror and tsunami warnings.
Residents Panic as Ground Shakes for Minutes
People on Flores and nearby islands scrambled for safety amid the early morning tremor. “I was in the field. People ran in panic. I am still… scared,” said Nuraini from Adonara island. In Maumere town, Agustinus Florianus told Reuters, “Everyone ran out into the street.”
Despite the fear, the East Flores Disaster Mitigation agency reported no immediate damage or casualties. However, social media buzzed with reports of strong shaking as far away as Makassar in South Sulawesi.
Aftershocks and Tsunami Warnings Keep Communities on Edge
A 5.6-magnitude aftershock hit Larantuka shortly after the main quake, adding to the tension. Authorities issued tsunami warnings for Maluku, East Nusa Tenggara, West Nusa Tenggara, and parts of Sulawesi.
Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) flagged the quake’s 12km shallow depth as a factor for potential secondary hazards like tsunamis and landslides. The US Geological Survey confirmed casualties are unlikely but didn’t rule out risks from these secondary events.
Indonesia’s Perilous Location on the Ring of Fire
Indonesia sits on the notorious Pacific “Ring of Fire,” a hotspot for volcanic eruptions and massive seismic activity. Tectonic plate collisions in this region make earthquakes like this a frequent and deadly hazard.
