Massive Fire Near Heathrow Forces Runway Switch
A huge fire has broken out near Heathrow Airport, sending thick smoke billowing into the air. The airport has been forced to change its flight operations, using the northern runway for landings and the southern runway for takeoffs.
15 Fire Engines Battle Blazing Field
About 15 fire engines and 100 firefighters are on the scene in Feltham, tackling a blaze that’s engulfing six hectares including fields, parkland, a cemetery, and an animal sanctuary. Residents nearby, especially around Bedfont Sports Club, have been told to keep windows and doors firmly shut due to heavy smoke.
“The fire is spewing out a lot of smoke,” said Station Commander Paul Casey. “Residents in the surrounding area should keep their windows and doors closed.”
Firefighters Called In From All Around
The fire brigade was called at 2:53pm, with crews from Feltham, Chiswick, Heathrow, and Heston quickly arriving. Surrey’s fire service is also pitching in with 4×4 vehicles to help tackle the blaze, which reportedly involves gas cylinders. Police have established a large cordon to keep the area safe.
Flights Still On Schedule Despite Chaos
Heathrow Airport has confirmed that despite the runway shuffle, there have been no flight cancellations or delays so far, and operations continue as normal. “We have alternated our runways this afternoon due to an off-airport fire,” said a spokesperson.
The cause of the fire remains unknown as emergency services continue to battle the blaze.
